Study Abroad: While the UK maintains its dominance, Ireland has quickly established itself as a notable alternative. Above all, Germany is leading the surge in popularity.
The United States is no longer the default coveted destination for Indian students. Applications to U.S. universities have decreased by 13% year on year. Meanwhile, European destinations like Germany (which saw an increase from 13.2% in 2022 to 32.6% in 2024-25) and the UAE (where 42% of international students are Indian) are experiencing unprecedented interest.
In 2022, the U.S. (19%) and Canada (18%) were the top destinations for Indian students. By 2023, the U.S. surged to nearly 60%, before settling at 47% due to various factors. Two years later, the landscape has shifted. The U.S. is no longer leading; Germany now shows the highest growth. This change is driven by career prospects rather than weather or language. Indian students have recalibrated their choices.
Germany takes the lead: Student share surged from 13.2% in 2022 to 32.6% in 2024–25, surpassing Canada and the U.S., the report noted. The Federal Statistical Office of Germany reported that Indian student enrolments have more than doubled over the past five years, significantly increasing to nearly 60,000 (2025) from 49,500 (2023).
Decline in traditional destinations: Canada dropped from 17.85% to 9.3%, and the USA saw a decrease of 13%. The rising cost of studying in the US is partly attributed to the weakening Indian rupee. In March 2023, the exchange rate ranged from Rs 81.71 to Rs 82.72 per US dollar.
Funding education: 33% depend on loans, 28% on scholarships, highlighting a financially pragmatic perspective. Cost is viewed not as a barrier but as a calculated investment. The primary consideration is not just affordability; it is employability.
Preferred programmes: 86.5% choose master degrees, with Management & MBA programmes increasing from 30% to 55.6% in three years. STEM fields are growing, accounting for 38.6% of total preferences. Computer Science, IT, and Data Science lead (28.7%), followed by Engineering (9.9%). Healthcare/Pharma has a smaller share at 5.8%, the report added.
Europe remains a highly sought-after destination for Indian students due to its affordability and diverse opportunities, with the UK serving as a traditional focal point. Despite concerns about policy changes, the UK continues to attract tens of thousands of students each year, thanks to its globally ranked universities, shorter postgraduate degrees, and wide range of subjects. While the UK maintains its dominance, Ireland has quickly established itself as a notable alternative. Above all, Germany is leading the surge in popularity.
